The First Daybreak
"http://www.fortunecity.com/millenium/paddington/8/home.html...or is it index.htm? No, wait, its fortunecity/paddington... no, thats not right..."
-Daybreak staff member giving someone the URL
Daybreak was steaming along, with book reviews and artwork. The original background was floral blue, with the text in bright colors. Practically the only problem was the URL; that is, the long (or short) code that you type into your browser to go to a web page. www.yahoo.com and
www.database.org/articles/penguins/eating_habits/what_to_feedem.html are examples. Obviously, the latter is much harder to remember... and the same was true with the initial address. So Anne and Emily looked into getting a domain name, like www.yahoo.com or www.seiu.com . Though several places were examined, Simplenet was finally decided on.
For about $100, we could get a domain name. After considering as possibilities "books.com", "yoda.com", "kishka.com", "daybreak.com," ad nauseum, "daybreak.com" was picked. But because we were paying Simplenet for the name, it was www.daybreak.simplenet.com . Not as short as we were hoping for, of course, but shorter than
http://www.fortunecity.com/millenium/paddington/8/index.html .
